Specialist Central is committed to the protection of your sensitive, personal, and health information (as defined in the Privacy Act 1988). The providers in this practice require your consent to communicate with other medical and allied health providers involved in your care, Medicare Australia, private health funds and other third parties from time to time.

We collect information from you and your healthcare providers to enable us to provide the best possible care for you. We require personal details and a full medical history so that our providers can assess, diagnose and treat your problem.

All information is stored on a secure server and any information released to third parties is only released with your consent.

Use and Disclosure

Our providers are in the business of healthcare. Your information is used primarily for your ongoing medical treatment. However, we may use your personal information in the following ways:

  • Shared health care between providers of this centre, relating to your healthcare, including locums.
  • Medical records and radiology images for teaching purposes
  • Hospitals and providers involved in your in-hospital procedures
  • Clinical research
  • Accreditation
  • Practice Administration
  • Billing and collection of fees
  • Legal firms relating to WorkCover Australia, Motor Vehicle Accident Commission, Independent Medico-legal reports and collection of unpaid fees.
  • Debt collection agencies

Security and Storage

Specialist Central will take all reasonable steps to ensure that your information is not compromised. We will use every endeavor to protect your information from unauthorised access, misuse, loss or damage, modification or disclosure to outside third parties. We may outsource data storage and/or information. Every reasonable step will be taken to ensure all parties concerned adhere to Australian Standards and the Privacy Act for the protection, confidentiality and privacy of your information.

However, we cannot guarantee that any harmful virus’ or other criminal activities will not enter Specialist Centrals computer systems. You should be aware of the risks associated with using websites.

It is recommended that you protect your own computer systems by the use of appropriate anti-virus and firewalls.

If any loss, damage or other issue is caused by information you send to Specialist Central, or your computer system being compromised in any way that is beyond our control, Specialist Central cannot take responsibility in these instances.

Access to medical records

In accordance with the Privacy Act, part or all of your medical record may be provided to you on written request. An administrative fee may apply. You must provide confirmation of your identity. In some instances where it would be deemed detrimental to your care or legislation prevents you receiving your medical record, that record may not be disclosed to you. An explanation will be provided in this instance.
